We’ve compiled a list of reasons to help you to keep your new years resolutions, especially when it comes to fitness. Some of these will be quick points, others will be more in-depth product reviews.

1. Buy a Fitness Tracker

Actually seeing the results of your day’s work makes such a difference. Being able to see how many steps you took can challenge you to do even more steps the next day. This is the absolute best investment when trying to track your progress.

We recommend the Fitbit Charge 3 Fitness Activity because it’s affordable, comfortable and gives you a wide range of fitness information.

2. Avoid Office Treats

I don’t know about you, but our office kitchen is filled with unhealthy food – brownies, cookies, chocolates. Just say no!

3. Don’t Buy Bigger Sizes

This is a good one. Basically, it’s important to stay uncomfortable in your current clothes. The minute you start buying bigger sizes, the more comfortable you feel and the less motivated you are to get back in shape.

4. Walk at Lunch

This is another office tip, but use your lunch wisely. Don’t just get up from your office chair, walk to the kitchen and sit in the office kitchen until lunch is over. Quickly eat your healthy lunch and then change your shoes and go outside. Imagine 30 minutes a day of walking, it does wonders to clear your mind and gets you fit.

5. Water Can Never Leave Your Side

If you always have a bottle of water next to you, you won’t buy sugary drinks and your stomach will feel more full.

6. Stop Eating While Doing Things

We have been conditioned to always be eating, to always have food by our sides. You don’t have to eat while you watch TV, for example. If you are hungry, have a healthy snack.

7. Have Fun Failing

If you try lots, you will fail lots. If you don’t try, you won’t fail as much but what fun is that? You only live once so try, try, try and don’t get down on yourself if you have a bad day, if you miss a workout, if you eat a donut. It’s just a bad day.

8. Reduce Clutter

If you’re surrounded by a messy house or even a messy office, you will be less inclined to work out. Clutter often means you’re overwhelmed so try to reduce your clutter and free your mind to exercise.

9. Don’t Share Your Resolution With Toxic People

Conventional wisdom is to look to your friends and family for support, but if you have toxic people in your life, it’s alright to keep your new years resolution to yourself. It’s better to have this as your secret then to share with people who won’t support you.

10. Find The Right Gym For You

If you plan on going to a gym, make sure to research it. Every gym has its own culture. If you’re female and feel more comfortable with a women’s only gym, there are tons out there.

11. Be A Role Model

Being fit and healthy is often passed down. When you eat healthier, so do you children. Your parents, your co-workers, your children, all the people in your life are influenced by your food choices, so remember how you look and what you eat, influences many.

12. Look At Yourself Naked

This may be the hardest tip but it’s important to do. This is your body, every part of it. Really look at what you look like and make a goal to improve it. It’s too easy to change in the dark, to not look in the mirror and pretend you’re healthier than you are. Sticking to your fitness goals means confronting the harsh reality.

13. Park Far Away

When you’re shopping look for a far parking spot instead of a closer one. Those extra steps do make a difference. If it’s in the middle of winter and freezing, then we understand parking close!

14. Enjoy some podcasts

There are thousands and thousands of podcasts out there and the podcast app comes with almost every phone so it’s so easy to use. By finding a podcast you enjoy, it helps the time pass and you may even look forward to the gym so you can catch up on your favorite podcasts.

A couple of podcasts we recommend:

Fitness and Sports: The Jillians Michaels Show, View from the Penalty Box (Classic Hockey Stories)
Nutrition: Mastering Nutrition
Finance: Suze Orman

Earphone recommendation for the best podcast sound quality: Wireless Earbuds Bluetooth Headphones

There truly are tons out there, just look!

15. No Excuses…especially in the winter

For a few months, the weather will be awful. No excuses, just go to the gym or stay home and do some exercises in the comfort of your home. There’s always the opportunity to do something.

16. Just Move

Similar to no excuses, but the bare minimum you can do is just move. The absolute worst thing you can do for your heart, metabolism and emotions is to just sit there. If you’re at work, take the stairs instead of the elevator.

17. Stop Comparing Yourself

Everyone takes a different path to success. Everyone has a life filled with positives and negatives. Maybe you aren’t in as great shape as the person next to you, but I bet your life is filled with many great things. Focus on you and make your own grass greener.

18. People Aren’t Judging You

It’s really pointless to feel self conscious about your body because everyone is too worried about their own issues and their own body to worry about yours. The key to life is everyone is self conscious so if you act confidently, you’ve won the battle. Chin up!

19. Buy New Work Out Clothes

A fresh perspective needs new clothes. We all know that feeling of slipping into new clothes, so go shopping and buy some great new work out clothes and hit the gym.

20. Stay Positive

We mentioned keeping toxic people out of your life, but also keep toxic news out of your life too. Keep your world filled with positivity so that may mean limiting or cutting off watching the news. If you can’t bear to stop watching the news, here’s a tip: Mute the parts that are exploitative or negative. Same goes with social media, be careful how much time you spend on it and who you follow.

21. Music Fuels Motivation

Ever hear that one song that gets your heart beat up, puts a smile on your face and makes you want to dance? All from a song. Make a playlist and put high tempo music on it.

Now with Spotify, Amazon Music and Youtube Music it’s so easy to listen to music everywhere.

22. Social Media Can Be Great

There are lots of fitness related support groups on Facebook to join, just search them out. Instagram is a visual social media so there are tons and tons of accounts to follow, but don’t just follow people that brag and flaunt their bodies. Look for those that are motivating, helpful and relatable.

23. Meal Boxes Delivery System

25. Be Honest

What are your real problems? What are you trying to fix? What’s realistic? Why are you overweight? Once you’re real with yourself, solving the problem is more attainable.

26. Don’t Do All Or Nothing

Don’t try to fix everything at once. Baby steps are important. This isn’t a race, so every day do something little to help improve your health. After a couple of weeks, those little steps will combine into a BIG one. Also, you can figure out what you like and don’t like when it comes to working out and eating healthy.

27. Treat Yourself

Yes it’s alright to treat yourself while you are focused on losing weight. A little cheat meal is alright once a week. You can also treat yourself in non food related ways, like going to the spa or going to a nice restaurant. Be kind to yourself and reward your accomplishments.

28. Only Choose Real Food

No more fast food, no more candy, no more processed foods. If it grows in the ground it’s probably good for you. Choose whole wheats, fruits, vegetables, lean meat and healthy snacks and watch the results.

29. Snack Throughout The Day

Most people think you have to greatly reduce your food consumption in order to lose weight. While there is some truth to this, it’s important to snack throughout the day. When you’re hungry, you’re more likely to eat anything in site (or get hangry!). Just make sure you’re choosing healthy snacks – carrots, almonds, apples are great snacks.

30. Be Bold

Try something new. Try something you would never think you would try. You may love it but you won’t know if you don’t challenge yourself and try something new.

31. Quit Smoking

There are so many bad side effects to smoking and we don’t need to go into it here, but smoking makes it so hard to exercise to your full capacity.

32. Hire A Trainer

A lot of people are afraid of trainers, but there are trainers that specialize in all types of people – different ages, genders, weights, goals. Do your research and find the best trainer for you. You don’t even need a trainer full time, just once to help make you a plan to follow.
Have you heard of FitnessTrainer.com? You can easily find a fitness trainer on the site.

33. Get a Massage

Sometimes when you work out your muscles get really sore. This soreness could deter you from working out. Try a sports massage, they not only feel amazing, but they truly work to help loosen your muscles. A lot of times massage is covered by your health insurance plan so check it out.

34. Commercial Cardio

We all hate commercials, but use it to your advantage and run in place or do some sit ups while the commercials are airing.
Our absolute favorite sit up machine (to do during commercials) is the RitFit Evolution Abdominal Machine because it provides neck support and is easy to grip.

35. Try New Diets

Yes there are fad diets, strange diets and diets that come and go, but there are diets that work. We have tried the Keto diet and absolutely love it because the results are quick and obvious.
While there are tons of books on the Keto diet, we love the book Simply Keto because it outlines easy to make recipes and actually made us excited to try Keto.
If you’re looking for a Keto program, we love Keto Camp created by Chris Albert, a certified trainer and fitness entrepreneur for the past decade. He’s one of the original founders of Metroflex Gym, Long Beach where he coached superstars like CT Fletcher, Mike Rashid, and numerous fighters, athletes, and professional bodybuilders.

36. Start a Mini Home Gym

If you don’t want to sign up for a gym or would rather exercise in the comfort and privacy of your own home, then pick up a few pieces of key exercise equipment. It doesn’t matter where you workout, just that you do.
Here’s what we recommend for a quick, affordable home gym:

37. Look For a Partner

Some people want to work out alone, but others need the support of a friend so try to find someone else who you can rely on to exercise with you. Someone that will push you to keep going even if you want to quit. An easy way to find someone is to post it to your Facebook account, you would be surprised at how many takers you will get.

38. Fitness Apps

There are so many great fitness apps to help you on your fitness journey. Literally all you have to do is open your app store and search fitness. We recommend the Nike app, Daily Burn and Couch to 5K.

39. Youtube is Free

There are so many free Youtube channels that you can incorporate into your fitness routine. Just do a search and see all the free content.

40. Sleep More

This is an obvious one, but if you’re tired you won’t feel like working out. Get into a great sleep cycle and sleep as early as possible. Watching TV late at night is pointless and a time waste. Read a book, go to sleep early and wake up refreshed.

41. Sign Up For A Race

Even if you don’t plan on running, walking through a race is perfectly fine. The point is that you have something to look forward to and work towards. Walking a 2K race is still impressive.

42. Write a Daily To-Do List

Busy people get stressed when they try to keep all their information in their head. Write your goals down, write what you want to accomplish, write down what time you want to get things done at and reference that list throughout the day. There is actually a lot of time in the day if you plan it out right.

43. 10 Minute Meditation

Take 10 minutes to quiet yourself. Close your eyes. Turn off the TV. Put your phone on silent in another room. Let your mind be free. Try it out and see how you feel after those 10 minutes.

44. Write a Fitness Journal

A lot of people hit a wall after a month or two, but if you take the time every day to write a journal of what you did, you can look back and see how much you have accomplished. A work out journal is perfect for those tough days.

45. Online Virtual Fitness Trainers

Another option if you want to work out at home is to hire an online, virtual trainer. With your web cam they can watch you work out, motivate you and give you tips. They can even provide meal plans and motivational coaching.
We love Torrie Wilson Fit, a celebrity trainer who is so nice and so fit.

There are tons of virtual trainers out there, just do your research.

46. Have Fun

This is the most obvious yet important tip. This is hard work but should also be fun. Change your workout routine, change what classes you’re taking, even change what gym you go to if you’re getting bored. The more fun you’re having, the better chance you’ll keep it up.

BONUS TIP: Organize Your Home (Inspired by Marie Kondo)

We wrote an article on the latest craze: Marie Kondo’s Tidying Up (Netflix). A clean home = a more organized life, which will help you achieve your fitness goals. Her folding technique is worth the price of admission alone. Article is below:
